AN ADVENT MESSAGE
THE FIRST CHRISTMAS MESSENGERS
The word “angel” means “messenger”. As we listen to the messages brought by the angels to Mary, Joseph and the shepherds, let us also listen to the messages God is sending us in this holy Christmas season.
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, the angel Gabrielle was sent by God to Nazareth in Galilee to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary. He came to her and said, "Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” -Luke 1:26-28
The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you have found favor with God. You will conceive and bear a son. You will call him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will rule over the house of Jacob forever and of his kingdom there will be no end.” -Luke 1:31-33
The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. For nothing is impossible with God” -Luke 1:35-37
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place this way: When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to with child from the Holy Spirit. Joseph, being a good man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, vowed to dismiss her quietly. But then an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid. The child Mary carries is conceived of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to call him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” -Matthew 1:18-21
Then an angel of the Lord stood before them and the glory of the Lord shone around them and they were afraid. But the angel said to them, Do not fear, for I bring tidings of great joy which shall be for all people. To you this day is born, in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you, you shall find the child wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth to His people.” -Luke 2:8-14
